Which gives you a raw xml file. This isn’t useful for anyone whose browser doesn’t handle xml, or who doesn’t know how to deal with them.
Since almost nobody uses RSS readers, feedburner’s offer of failsafes in the form of google reader and email subscriptions seemed like a good idea.

I have literally never heard a single person complain about the lack of email notifications and google reader *is* an rss reader so I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. “Nobody uses RSS readers so I give people the failsafe of using an RSS reader!”
